Asiawood Lumbers Sdn. Bhd. provides different types of wooden pallets that are well designed and constructed to cater to the various storage, handling and logistic needs and applications across a wide spectrum of industries from manufacturing, assembling, medical, pharmaceutical to food and beverage, construction and telecommunication.

Why Companies Use Wooden Pallets

Pallet is a portable, horizontal, rigid, composite platform used as a base for assembling, storing, stacking, handling and transporting goods as a unit load; often equipped with a superstructure. The superstructure is the assembly that is attached to the supporting base of the pallet.

Pallets are used to stack, store, protect, and transport materials in the course of being handled by materials handling equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks or conveyors, being stored in racking or bulk storage or being positioned in transport vehicles. The pallet is the most common base for the unit load, which includes pallet and goods stacked on top of it, typically secured by stretch wrap, strapping, shrink wrap, adhesive, pallet collar, or other means of stabilization.

Besides allowing handling and storage efficiencies, wooden pallets are highly durable and able to withstand excessive weight; thus, perfect for shipping heavy and fragile goods. Being made out of wood also means that they are eco-friendly, cost-effective and easy to repair. Repairing and recycling old wooden pallets and re-useable wooden materials will reduce the impact on the environment by preventing these materials from going into the landfills.

Pallet Selection Considerations

Pallets continue to evolve over the years, playing a significant role in modern logistics, allowing efficiency in the storing, handling and transport of unit loads. Here are six major considerations in your pallet selections for your business or logistics needs.

1. Disposable or Reusable

When the wooden pallets are for single-use only, they are considered disposable or expendable pallets. However, pallets that are use or re-use again are considered reusable pallets; they are more durable besides providing a lower cost per trip and less environmental impact than pallets which can be used only once, (which are subjected to removal transport costs).

2. Direction of Entry – Block or Runner

Pallets can be classified as block or runner pallets. Block pallets provide more options for pallet entry by material handling equipment. Pallets with solid runners typically allow two-way entry (at each end of the pallet) while notched runners allow partial four-way entry by forklifts through the notches, as well as full access from the ends, and not by pallet jacks, while block pallets typically allow full four-way entrance.

3. Pallet Style

Pallet style relates to features such as a single or double face (single or both top and bottom deck), and whether a pallet is reversible (either side can be used for the top deck) or non-reversible (having top and bottom deck). Various bottom deck configurations are also considerations in pallet style. A single faced pallet is also commonly called a skid.

4. Pallet Sizes

The most common wooden pallet size is the 48inch × 40inch pallet. Another option is to opt for customised pallet sizes based on specific needs and requirements.

5. Destination of Shipment

For shipping of goods internationally, the wooden pallets must comply with the ISPM 15 standards in heat treatment methods. The treatment code “HT” will be marked on the wooden pallets.

6. Thickness of the Top and Bottom Deck Boards

The standard thickness of the top (or upper surface) and bottom (or lower surface) deck boards are 1/2” to 5/8” thick. However, the thickness of these deck boards can be customised according to the special unit load of the shipment.
